Understanding Intensive Outpatient Program

An Intensive Outpatient Program is a flexible, structured program designed for adults who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy but do not require the full-day care of Partial Care or the 24-hour structure of inpatient treatment. At Emerald Wellness, our IOP runs three to four days per week, with both daytime and evening options, making it accessible for individuals balancing work, school, or family responsibilities.

This program is ideal for clients experiencing moderate to severe mental health symptoms or co-occurring disorders who require consistent therapeutic support to maintain stability. IOP allows participants to receive targeted, evidence-based care while continuing to live at home and stay engaged with their daily lives and communities.

What the IOP Program Involves

Our IOP is designed to provide structured, focused care while allowing participants to maintain daily responsibilities. Each week includes a balance of therapy, skills training, and holistic practices that promote recovery and resilience.

  • Group Therapy: We cover topics such as intention setting, breaking maladaptive patterns, positive psychology, and practical strategies to bridge insights into daily action.
  • Individual Therapy: Weekly one-on-one sessions outside of group hours, tailored to each client’s unique challenges, goals, and progress.
  • Medication Management: Monthly psychiatric support, or more frequent as needed, to ensure safe and effective treatment planning.
  • Holistic & Experiential Activities: Mindfulness, journaling, communication exercises, and relaxation techniques to support emotional regulation and overall wellness.
  • Skill-Building Workshops: Evidence-based strategies to improve mood, restructure negative thoughts, and build resilience through CBT and other therapeutic approaches.
  • Family Support & Case Management: Sessions are available as needed to strengthen family relationships, provide education, and help clients apply skills in their home environments.

This structure allows clients to develop practical coping tools, improve self-awareness, and make meaningful progress in their recovery while balancing work, school, or family life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your IOP Questions Answered

Inpatient care provides 24-hour support in a hospital or residential setting, designed for people in crisis or needing constant monitoring. Partial Care (PC) is a full-day outpatient program, offering structured treatment five days a week for those who need more intensive support. Intensive Outpatient Programs offer a middle ground; clients attend therapy 3-4 days per week for three hours a day, but continue living at home and managing work, school, or family responsibilities.
The length of stay depends on each client’s needs and progress. On average, most clients participate in IOP for 6–8 weeks, with regular assessments to ensure they receive the right level of care at every stage of their recovery.
After finishing IOP, many clients step down to a lower level of care, such as the Outpatient Aftercare Program. This gradual transition helps reinforce progress, prevent relapse, and provide ongoing guidance.
At Emerald Wellness, we understand that recovery requires more than just treating symptoms. It’s about supporting the whole person. Our IOP combines evidence-based therapies like CBT and DBT with holistic practices such as mindfulness, art, and yoga to promote mind-body healing. With both day and evening options, flexible scheduling allows clients to stay engaged with work, school, or family. Most importantly, our trauma-trained, compassionate team tailors care to each individual, creating a safe, supportive space where lasting change can happen.
