Understanding Perinatal Wellness IOP

The Perinatal Wellness Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Emerald Wellness is designed for parents who are pregnant or within one year postpartum and are experiencing mood, anxiety, or trauma-related challenges. This program provides a safe and nurturing space where individuals can share their experiences, learn coping strategies, and heal alongside others who understand the unique challenges of the perinatal period.

What the Perinatal Wellness IOP Involves

Our Perinatal Wellness IOP provides specialized care for individuals during pregnancy and postpartum, blending clinical expertise with compassionate support. Each week includes:

  • Group Therapy for Moms: Small group sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (10 AM–1 PM) focusing on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, traumatic birth experiences, coping skills, and shared support.
  • Individual Therapy: Weekly one-on-one sessions tailored to address each client’s unique challenges, goals, and progress.
  • Medication Management: Ongoing psychiatric care, with medication support provided weekly or as needed to ensure safe and effective treatment.
  • Mind-Body & Holistic Practices: Activities like mindfulness, yoga, and art that encourage stress reduction, healing, and self-compassion.
  • Partner & Family Involvement: Optional sessions with loved ones to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and provide education.
  • Care Coordination & Aftercare Planning: Collaboration with doctors and providers, along with referrals and Aftercare Groups for sustained recovery and long-term wellness.

This structure empowers parents to build coping skills, manage stress, and strengthen their support systems while balancing the demands of family life.

Yes. We recognize that family support is an important part of recovery. Partners and family members may join select sessions for education, communication strategies, and support tools. Involving loved ones helps them better understand your experience and strengthens your home environment for lasting wellness.

While our general IOP program addresses a wide range of mental health needs, our Perinatal Wellness IOP is designed specifically for pregnancy and postpartum challenges. The program provides targeted support for concerns such as traumatic birth experiences, adjusting to motherhood, intrusive or anxious thoughts, and the resurfacing of past trauma.

After completing the program, many clients transition to less intensive support, such as our Aftercare Program. This helps sustain progress and provide continued encouragement as you navigate parenting and daily life with greater balance and confidence.

The experiences and challenges of the perinatal period are unique. Pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood bring profound biological, emotional, and identity shifts that are different from other life stages. Our clinical team has *advanced training in perinatal mental health, and our programming reflects the physical, emotional, and relational realities of this time.

*The advanced training in perinatal mental health is important to emphasize, as there are many factors that impact Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) and the perinatal experience that may be overlooked or misunderstood in a more general program (factors such as one’s personal and family history, culture, race, gender biases, traumatic experiences with fertility challenges, loss, childbirth).

When going through what might be one of the most difficult periods of your life, it is important that your time in treatment feels relevant and validating, and that your treatment team is qualified to help you.

Our perinatal IOP provides individualized, trauma-informed care that recognizes the profound physical, emotional, and relational challenges of pregnancy and early parenthood. We prioritize self-understanding, collaborative goal-setting, and consistent support, while remaining flexible and responsive to each client’s needs. The focus is on building skills and insight that support both immediate relief and long-term wellness.

Our integrative program blends evidence-based clinical practice with holistic and creative modalities to support mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Participants engage in art, music, movement, and structured psychoeducational learning, culminating in visual representations of progress and measurable improvements in mental and physical health.

Yes, we have weekly materials designed specifically for clients to share with their identified support people. We also offer sessions involving identified support people when agreed upon between the client and treatment team.

The length of time in our IOP is determined by a client’s individual needs. It is typically no shorter than 6 weeks and no longer than 12 weeks.

Aftercare planning is discussed with you throughout your time in treatment, so you have a thoughtfully developed plan firmly in place once you’re ready for discharge. We place a strong emphasis on doing this well so you can maintain and build upon the growth you achieve here.
